Natural Hair Journey

 by: SGTV Intern Shari McIntosh
"Mom what will happen to my hair if I stop relaxing it?" At twelve and a half years old I asked my mother this as she stirred a bottle of Root Touch-up, "Nothing" she said nonchalantly. That year I told her I don't want to keep putting relaxer in my hair, and with her persuasion, decided to get my hair braided. After a year of braids and other protective hairstyles I decided to do something new with my kool kinks. The same day my mother took me to a local 'natural' hair salon, looking up at the African themed banner, I walked in with high expectations only to meet snarls, stares, and chuckles. The woman at the front desk called us over and asked us if we had an appointment. "Yes but the woman over the phone said she was a natural hair stylist" I told her, "there are natural hair stylists here" she said pointing to an eccentrically dressed woman at the back of the salon.

Her name was Raychel and she welcomed us with a warm smile and a handshake, "so...you want a natural hairstyle huh? Have you thought about Jheri curls?" I shook my head and explained to her that I wanted to style my hair without the use of any chemicals. "But sweetie, you can have healthy hair with chemicals too!" she held my hand and led me to her booth, feeling confused and crumbling under the pressure of those around me, I agreed to have my hair relaxed again. Two years later my hair was half the length it use to be and I was growing tired of being slave to the costly process. Then I discovered YouTube.

After watching video after video of natural hair journeys and tutorials I found myself swept up into the natural hair movement. With renewed confidence and enthusiasm I stopped relaxing and went natural again. I braided it for months and tried different tutorial styles often, time after time I woke up looking nothing like I intended. Frustrated and tired I decided to set a realistic goal for myself. I had to remind myself that beauty has many forms and lower my expectations. I'm still moving forward in my journey, but keeping in mind that I am an individual, I'm not afraid to love myself, listen to my heart, and be who I want to be. With this I will continue to share my journey, ideas, and things I learn along the way.
